Alicia ‘Lee’ Charlton was born in 1979, growing up in Bentinck Township, a rural area outside of Chesley, Ontario.
Lee began her artistic endeavours at a young age starting with simple pencil sketchings of her Grandparents’ property and soon moving to charcoal studies of the animals around her. Lee’s family instilled a great appreciation for the outdoors and nurtured her love of wildlife and when a relative from the Waterloo area invited her to a client's art studio, she readily agreed. As soon as she set foot in the studio, Alicia felt the impact of sculpting fall upon her and she discovered her true passion.
“I am just so grateful. If I
would not have walked into that studio I would never have
known and now I can't imagine
life without [sculpting].”
In 2000, Alicia Charlton moved to Waterloo and began her career with Lund'ys Sculptures. Under Maurice Lund’s watchful eye, Lee’s sculpting began to blossom. Grasping the sculpting techniques quickly, Lee became more experimental with detailing, finding great reward in making hard rock appear pliable as the rolls of a walrus fold when his head turns towards the ocean or a muskox’s hair is tousled as a gust of wind bursts from behind.
“I love the concept of taking an inanimate object and uncovering this life and movement that defies its exterior, releasing the potential of the space within.”
